O Antiphon – 5

O RISING SUN, RADIANCE OF THE LIGHT ETERNAL AND SUN OF JUSTICE : COME AND ENLIGHTEN THOSE WHO SIT IN DARKNESS AND IN THE SHADOW OF DEATH.

In 2nd Peter we are being asked to understand that he [Peter] is not just repeating invented myths in preaching about Jesus.  He emphasizes this in saying:  “But we had been eye witnesses of his majesty.  He was honored and glorified by God the Father, when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory saying, “This is my Son, my Beloved with whom I am well pleased.  We ourselves heard this come from heaven while we were with him on the Holy Mountain.”   2 Peter 1: 16-18  Peter is referring to the Transfiguration on Mount Tabor when Jesus face “shone like the sun.”     Mt 17: 1-8  Not only that but his garments became white as the light.

One can see immediately the connection between the Old Testament references of the Messiah: “Day Spring” + “Rising Sun” + “Radiant Dawn” ~~~  and the wonderful manifestation [Theophany] of Jesus shining like the sun.   Peter again exhorts: “So we have  the prophetic message more firmly confirmed.  You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” 2 Peter 1:19

“By the tender Mercy of our God, the dawn upon high will break upon us to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadows of death, to guide our feet in the ways of peace.”  Luke 1: 78-79

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light, those who lived in a land of deep darkness ~~ on them light has shined.” Isaiah 9:2

“But for you who revere my Name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing…” Malachai 4: 2

Today also has something to say on the subject.  From now on in the Northern Hemisphere the darkness will gradually be pushed back by the increasing light ~~ as daytime prevails!   O Radiant Dawn!
